The Tort Not Taken

Posted in Law, Poetry on April 29, 2010 by George

Two broken surfboards diverged in a surf-shop,
And sorry I could not use both
And be one beach bum, long I stood
And looked to one as long as I could
To where it was cracked in the foam;

Then took the other, because I was aware,
And having perhaps the better board,
Because it was waxy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the ocean air
Had worn them really about the same,

And both that morning equally displayed
On racks no hands had waxed before.
Oh, I kept the other board for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever go back.

I shall be telling this without a winch of pain
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two broken surfboards diverged in a surf-shop, and I—
I took the one less surfed on,
And that has made all the difference.
