Ebonics At Work: “Sheeeeiit, foo, I’z be doin’ dat shit an’ shorty be axin me fo’ sum’ scrilla.”

Via CNN US:

Looks like the DEA wants to hire ebonics translators to listen to wiretaps, translate them and then testify in court.  This is an interesting choice because of the highly political and controversial issues surrounding the language. Agent Sanders for the DEA says, “I can’t say it’s spoken all the time, like Spanish and Vietnamese. But there are people trying to use this to evade detection while trafficking in drugs,” he said. Or to put that another way…Agent Sanders fo’ da DEA says, “I can’t say it’s spoken all da tyme, like Spanish an’ Vietnamese, But dere iz peeps trying ta use dis here ta duck from da 5-0 while slangin chronic n` shit  ” in the hood yo.”
